AI Hasn't Replaced Architects—It Has Added Another Layer to the Design Process

The reality of AI in architecture from the perspective of a Pakistani architectural practice.
Artificial Intelligence has become impossible to ignore. Every few weeks, another software claims it can design a house, generate an interior, or produce a photorealistic render within seconds. Social media is flooded with futuristic villas, impossibly beautiful cafés, and perfectly lit interiors, all claiming to have been "designed" using AI.
For many clients, this creates an obvious question:
"If AI can generate a building in a few minutes, why does architecture still take months?"
The answer lies in understanding the difference between designing architecture and creating an image.
At ORAD, we use AI in our visualization workflow, but we do not believe it has reduced the time required to produce meaningful architecture. In many instances, AI has introduced another stage into an already demanding design process.


Architecture Is a Process of Thinking—Not Image Generation
Architecture has never been about producing attractive renders.
It is the discipline of organising space, light, structure, climate, materials, movement, and human experience into a coherent whole.
Before a single image is produced, an architect has already spent weeks understanding the site, studying sunlight, analysing circulation, coordinating structure and services, resolving construction details, and questioning every design decision.
None of these processes can currently be replaced by artificial intelligence.
An AI-generated image may resemble architecture, but resemblance is not architecture.
A building must perform before it can persuade.
AI Is Excellent at Atmosphere
Where AI genuinely excels is architectural visualization.
Once a project has been carefully modelled and accurately rendered, AI can enrich the final presentation by introducing environmental qualities that would otherwise require extensive post-production.
It can enhance:
Natural lighting
Sky conditions
Seasonal landscapes
Human activity
Vegetation
Material mood
Reflections
Environmental depth
These additions make architectural presentations more engaging and emotionally compelling.
For client presentations, this can be extremely valuable.
However, these improvements occur after the architecture has already been designed.
AI enhances perception.
It does not generate architectural intent.
The Danger of Designing Through AI
A growing number of visualisations today bypass careful architectural modelling altogether.
Furniture is not modelled.
Lighting is not resolved.
Interior details are ignored.
Landscape is left incomplete.
Instead, AI is expected to "finish" the project.
While the first image may appear convincing, the architectural language quickly begins to collapse.
Materials shift between views.
Furniture changes scale.
Windows alter proportions.
Lighting fixtures disappear.
Joinery details become impossible to construct.
The space slowly loses its identity.
This is because AI predicts visual probability rather than understanding architectural logic.
Without accurate modelling, every new image becomes a reinterpretation instead of a representation.
For architecture, consistency is everything.
Why AI Often Increases Production Time
There is a widespread belief that AI has made architects dramatically faster.
Our experience suggests otherwise.
Today, the workflow often looks like this:
Design the project.
Develop the BIM model.
Resolve construction details.
Produce technical renders.
Generate AI versions.
Reject inconsistent outputs.
Rewrite prompts.
Regenerate imagery.
Correct geometry.
Repair materials.
Restore architectural intent.
Instead of replacing rendering, AI has become another production layer.
The time saved in one step is often spent correcting inaccuracies in the next.
For professional architectural practice, precision remains non-negotiable.
AI Still Doesn't Understand Buildings
Artificial Intelligence has been trained on millions of images.
Architects are trained to understand buildings.
These are fundamentally different forms of knowledge.
AI cannot reliably distinguish between structural systems, service coordination, waterproofing strategies, construction tolerances, accessibility requirements, or climatic performance.
This limitation becomes particularly evident in Pakistan, where architecture must respond to intense summer heat, dust, unreliable utilities, seismic considerations, and locally available construction methods.
A visually striking render means little if the building cannot function within its environment.
Good architecture is always rooted in context.
The Hidden Cost of AI
Another misconception is that AI is inexpensive.
Professional architectural studios often subscribe to multiple AI platforms alongside BIM software, rendering engines, cloud computing services, and post-production tools.
Each platform excels at different tasks, meaning studios frequently move between several applications before achieving the desired result.
AI has therefore become an additional operational cost rather than a replacement for conventional software.
Its value lies in enhancing communication—not eliminating professional expertise.
Architecture in Pakistan Requires More Than Algorithms
Architecture in Pakistan presents challenges that no image-generation model can fully resolve.
Designing a residence in Islamabad differs significantly from designing one in Lahore, Karachi, Murree, or the northern valleys.
Climate, orientation, materials, labour availability, local by-laws, construction techniques, and cultural patterns all influence architectural decisions.
These variables cannot be addressed through generic image generation alone.
Every successful building begins with careful observation of its place.
Technology can assist this process, but it cannot replace it.

Technology should amplify architectural ideas, not generate them.
Final Thoughts
Artificial Intelligence is transforming the way architecture is presented, but presentation has never been the essence of architecture.
The success of a building cannot be measured by the realism of its render. It is measured by the quality of its spaces, the intelligence of its planning, its environmental performance, and its ability to improve everyday life.
As AI continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly become an increasingly valuable tool for architects.
But architecture will remain a profoundly human discipline.
Because buildings are not created by prompts.
They are created through judgement, experience, technical knowledge, and the careful making of place.
That is where architecture begins.
